To read the journaling easier:
On Sunday we arranged a private tour of several areas outside of the city. Our guide picked us up in a minivan—much more comfortable than a tuk-tuk! Our first stop was the Mercado do Livramento in Setúbal, famous for its fish and seafood. There was a lot of it! Our guide pointed out all the different fish and how fresh they were. There were also fruit, vegetables, and baked goods. If I could have used the food, I would have definitely left with several bags.
Next we drove through the Arrábida Natural Park. There is usually a great view, our guide said, toward Lisbon and across to the ocean, but low clouds and fog kept that from us. But it was just a short drive to the tile factory, where we had a demonstration of how they make the hand-painted tiles you see all over Portugal.
Another short drive brought us to Azeitao, where we visited the JM da Fonseca winery, the oldest table wine producer in Portugal. They make classic wines, mostly from moscatel grapes, and everything there just drips of venerable age. I wasn't fond of it. Just down the street we had a leisurely lunch at a bbq restaurant, mostly fish. Across the street is a fun sculpture of giant grapes.
Our final stop was a newer winery. We had a nice sample of wines more like what I'm used to drinking at home. We were quiet on the ride back, well and truly tired from a long day.
