It was in 1947 that the Optimist was designed by the American naval architect Clark Mills,
at the initiative of Major Clifford McKay who, insperating himself with a race of soap boxes,
wanted to keep the children busy on the water, to avoid them hanging out in the city:
sailing rather than delinquency.
