In 1912, Japan presented flowering cherry trees to the United States as symbols of goodwill. They were planted in Washington DC. The trees signal the coming of spring with an explosion of life and color.

In Japan, the flowering cherry tree or Sakura is one of the most exalted plants. The cherry blossom is a symbol equated with the evanescence of human life. Epitomizing the transformation Japanese Culture has undergone through the ages. It is because of the unpredictability of the blooming and falling of the blossoms that spring is such a time of agitation and excitement.

During our visit to DC to see the cherry blossoms, Paul participated in a Kids Say the Darndest Things moment. He walked right up to an older couple and asked the woman, “Are you a Grandma?” She smiled, “No, but I sure would like to be.”
