The Pentagon was designed by George Bergstrom. The ground was broken on 11 September 1941 and dedicated on 15 January 1943. It spans 28.7 acres. The central courtyard is just over 5 acres.
Dad was assigned to the 6974th Support squadron. The 6974th Support Squadron was activated on 1 August 1960 at Arlington and assigned to the 6970th Support Group at Ft. Meade, Maryland. Within a few months, he was assigned as the Comm Center Supervisor.
Dad worked in the basement of the Pentagon. During his tenure, some notable events occurred. The Cuban Missile Crisis, 28-29 October 1962, and President Kennedy’s assassination on 22 November 1963. Dad told a story about taking a message to a Colonel. The Colonel’s aid, a Lieutenant wanted Dad to give him the message. Dad refused because the Lieutenant did not have a need to know or the appropriate clearance. Dad told the Lieutenant “When the Colonel is able to see me let me know. I will be downstairs.”
Assets Used:
I purchased a black and white photograph of the Pentagon from Almay and then colorized it.
