There are two ways to get to Igiugig by air or by water. The word Igiugig means "Like a throat that swallows water" The village is named for its location at the outlet of the Kvichak River into Lake Iliamna. The Kvichak River has the largest run of sockeye salmon in the world. The river is also famous for its rainbow trout which is unlike any rainbow trout found anywhere in the world.

Mom tells a story about the amount of fishing Dad did at the beginning of their marriage. Apparently, Dad was going fishing on most of his days off. At one point Mom sat Dad down and told him that he would have to forgo some of his fishing excursions as she needed his help with the kids and around the house. Dad did limit his fishing trips.
