Journaling
We left Alaska in December 1961. Alaska was no longer a territory. Statehood had been proclaimed on 3 January 1959. With two more dependents, Paul and Joan, our next stop: The Pentagon in Arlington. Virginia.
We flew from Alaska to McChord Air Force Base, Washington on CKA728 (Cook Inlet Aviation Flight 728). After picking up our carwe drove to New York via California.
We spent Christmas at Grandpa and Grandma Schindler’s.

While Dad found a place for us to live in Virginia, we stayed with Grandma Gilchrest at 912 Post Road, Scarsdale, New York. Sleeping arrangements were somewhat limited as Joan slept in a dresser drawer.

My only memories of Alaska are playing in an igloo and the statehood celebration. However, Mom tells several stories about me. She and a friend left their children in the car while they went into the dime store. I was left in charge. Everyone was crying so I went into the store and took some candy giving it to everyone except myself. Later I had to take money from my piggy bank and pay the store back. Then there was the morning Mom and Dad woke up and I was nowhere to be found. I had gotten up with the sun, in the middle of the night. Since it was daylight I got dressed and went to play. Eventually, I was found playing in the doghouse.

Mom would make our bread from scratch. She would give me some dough to knead for my own miniature loaf. My dough was black by the time I was done kneading it. Luckily, Mom would always keep another small piece of dough to replace mine with.

Mom also talks about the three days we were snowed in at home with Dad at work sleeping on desks and chairs. Eventually, the military come to dig us out. The snow was up to the roof on our building and the second floor of the two-story buildings.

One afternoon the Air Force decided to conduct a test on the evacuation procedures for the base, Dad called home to give Mom an early warning so she could have formula ready to go. We all piled into the car and proceeded to evacuate as you can imagine it was a whopping failure traffic was all backed up and we just sat in the car for several hours.
