The patch of 28th Bombardment Wing Heavy
Shield: nebuly seperating gold and azure.
Crest: On a wreath of the colors, gold and azure, a fleur-de-lis vertical to the outer leaves terminates in the form of wings. The gold represents excellence in all we do while the azure represents the sky. The nebuly line is where the two colors come together to make a cloud effect with the clouds representing the area of operation.
We arrived at Ellsworth AFB in February 1957 Dad was assigned to the 28th Bombardment Wing. Their mission to provide rapid, decisive, and sustainable combat airpower and expeditionary combat support; anything anywhere.
Ellsworth Air Force Base was originally called Rapid City Army Air Base. In 1947 it became Rapid City Air Force Base with the new 28th Bombardment Wing flying the B-29 Superfortress.
By 1953 the 28th was flying the RB-36 in March an RB-36 from the base crash in Newfoundland while returning from a routine exercise in Europe. All 23 souls perished in including Brigadier General Richard E Ellsworth the 28ths Commander. On the 13th of June 1953, President Dwight D Eisenhower visited the base and dedicated it in his name.
While stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base Dad witnessed the transition from the B-36 to the B-52. The last B-36 left Ellsworth on 29 May 1957 and the first B-52 arrived sixteen days later.
