On 3 November 1954 Dad received orders for a 90-day TDY to SAC XRAY in Tokyo. Two weeks later on the 17th of November the orders were amended to 180 days.

SAC X-Ray was one of several phonetic commands set up during the Korean War by General LeMay. The purpose of the commands was to control SACs forces and weapons including nuclear weapons. These phonetic commands were considered deputy headquarters of SAC.

While detached to SAC X-Ray Dad participated in a SAC communications exercise between the 14th and 19th of March 1955, for which he received a formal letter of appreciation. Captain Robert T Starke wrote, I would like to add my sincere appreciation to that expressed by Colonel Campbell in the attached letter for your significant contribution during the cited exercise.
