Mt Hood Squaw Grass

With the help of my Plant Snap app, I learned that these unusual plants are squaw grass, Xerophyllum tenax, also known as bear grass, Indian basket grass, and on the east coast, turkey beards. They can grow up to 5 feet tall, although most that we saw were in the 3-foot range. They fascinated and entertained throughout the hike to Elk Meadows.

Beautiful page showing its habitat. Thanks for the heads up on the app. I NEED it! Hope it also does dried seed cases in the fall.
