This is my daughter walking back from a secret creek in the Hudson Valley, NY, on the Fourth of July. The photo was snapped by her fiance. The location of the swimming hole in the creek is a closely guarded secret, and it is that air of mystery I wanted to convey in this layout. I did that with lots of color burning and also by dragging in a lot of the elements in the Artplay Palette and repurposing them for their non-dimensional qualities.
I started with the background (Artsy Paper #3 on color burn mode at 70% opacity over Artsy Paper #2 flipped vertically). I blended my daughter into the background using inverted masking. I wanted a glow around my daughter, and liked the burgundy background on the Story word label, so I pulled that in, super-sized it, and blended it under the photo on screen mode. By tapping a brush over it at reduced opacity, I was able to break up the lettering and control the background so it was more about color than about the rectangular label shape. I then duplicated the altered layer (different blend modes, different opacities) for just a little more presence. I then added the branch (duplicated on overlay mode) to give my text something to sit on. The butterflies are from a ribbon in the Artplay PaletteI supersized this, then blended it on color burn mode, layer-masking dimensional qualities away. I also supersized the flower element and positioned it to accentuate my daughter, using color dodge mode at 45% opacity. I added transfers/overlays as needed and some blue brushwork to add highlights and depth to the design. The finishing touches were the Beaded Threads and a Multimedia Flower element.
