With a few free hours in Taormina, we dashed out to climb the 500 stairs to the Sanctuary of Madonna della Rocca and Castello Saraceno. The sign at the base of the stairs said they were closed, but someone had written on it to go ahead, it was open. Nothing surprises us in Italy. We did make it almost all the way to the top before we encountered the section that was really and truly closed, but on the way we were treated to great views out over the Ionian Sea.
