There were just a few stragglers from the sandhill crane migration remaining on the refuge. Remember being surrounded by their calls to each other as some were in front of us and some were behind us on the other side of the canal. I saved a clip of their calls on my hard drive.

I first saw a sandhill crane in Michigan and he was just walking along the road - so big and massive - love the framing and the photo of the wings spread wide! gorgeous!

Love this. They look like our brolgas and I have a funny story to tell about them. A flock of them landed on a neighbour's wheat crop and being an environmentalist he flew over them in his ultralight to see if they'd follow so he move them along. We're on the verandah and looked up to see hundreds of them following him north. A little while later we saw them all coming back. So funny.
