Journaling:

Entering Stutthof, we saw this description posted on a gate: The cars brakes squeaked. On a small path we go through the forest and through the gate, where I see uniforms and guns and I already know that we enter a new, different reality. Ahead there is a clearing, to the right, barracks, everything is surrounded by barbed wire. You see figures moving fast. You see it all just as if you were looking at a picture through a lens.--Priest W. Gajdus

We hired a local historian to drive us out to the Stutthof Concentration Camp because we wanted to hear the stories. Five hours later, we were drained. What shook us to the core was how readily citizens closed their eyes to what was right under their noses. Our guide told us that the targeting of undesireables happened so slowly, so incrementally, that by the time people noticed what was going on, it was too late. By then, Hitlers power was absolute. As we said goodbye at the end of the trip, our guide clasped our hands and said never forget. --Sztutowo, Poland, July 2018

What a poignant page... the stark red and black... my father was one of the first American army to enter Buchenwald... he was never the same and died a broken man... never forget indeed...

I am disturbed by how this resonates with me today. Art is about emotion, and this is truly an intense piece. Love the red.

This is an excellent layout, with photos and the journaling. The sadness of it all grips my heart, when I think or dwell on it. You were brave to spend that amount of time there; I know I wouldn't be able to. Fabulous colors and art!

Extraordinarily chilling. I love how you designed the layout to reflect the horrifying subject matter. I can imagine how drained you were when you left such a toxic invironment. I dont know that I could have shaken it off for a very long time.

Agree... I often think of that horrific time in history and hope that we never revisit that kind of evil. What amazing images and truly candid journaling.

Such horror and sadness. I am afraid your title does not tell the whole story as anihilation still continues in other methods.

So sobering but wonderfully done. I've been to Dachau. I know how emotionally draining it is, and hard to believe even when you are looking at it.

somber art that evokes the inhumanity of humans, a story that sadly must be told time and time again. in these troubled times, we all need to be reminded of the horrors and of the goodness of those who fight against tyranny.
