Journaling:
Entering Stutthof, we saw this description posted on a gate: The cars brakes squeaked. On a small path we go through the forest and through the gate, where I see uniforms and guns and I already know that we enter a new, different reality. Ahead there is a clearing, to the right, barracks, everything is surrounded by barbed wire. You see figures moving fast. You see it all just as if you were looking at a picture through a lens.--Priest W. Gajdus
We hired a local historian to drive us out to the Stutthof Concentration Camp because we wanted to hear the stories. Five hours later, we were drained. What shook us to the core was how readily citizens closed their eyes to what was right under their noses. Our guide told us that the targeting of undesireables happened so slowly, so incrementally, that by the time people noticed what was going on, it was too late. By then, Hitlers power was absolute. As we said goodbye at the end of the trip, our guide clasped our hands and said never forget. --Sztutowo, Poland, July 2018
