Journaling: The Peterhof summer estate is a complex of palaces, gardens, fountains, and waterfalls that was built by Peter the Great in 1703, destroyed in World War II, and then rebuilt--its now a UNESCO World Heritage site. Its called the 'Russian Versaille,' because Peter got the inspiration for the palace design during a trip to France, where he saw the Chateau de Versailles. What Versaille doesnt have, though, are those amazing waterways. There are 64 fountains, all of them gravity-fed from the springs in the upper garden. No pumps. We were told that Peter actually lived in a little palace on the edge of the property, shown on the facing page, which overlooks the Gulf of Finland across to St. Petersburg. I can see why--the palace was overwhelmingly elaborate to the point of claustrophobia. Again there were those precious marquetry and parquet floors, and we wore shoe covers to tour. I was especially taken by Catherine the Greats throne, and the photo she had mounted above it...on her favorite horse, Brilliant. Loved that, as most ladies of the day did not commission court portraits of themselves on horseback! You could pay a few rubles to have your picture taken with the photo buskers. We passed on that opportunity.

I wanted to make this layout as frothy as the palace and gardens, so I layered up the background more than I usually would do, including the damask paper from the Shabby Christmas Artplay Palette. And then I dragged in lots and lots of jeweled buttons. The spread was so busy, I didn't need (couldn't fit) anything more but a little title and, of course, the journaling. But then I did manage to add one more thing...the crown in the title.
Amazing page for the amazing castle--the glitz, gold and glamour are truly echoed in your LO, which makes it so much fun. I especially like the photo of your shoe covers on the exquisite marble floor.

I so enjoy your travel layouts, you incorporate such a variety of beautiful pictures taken.
