The Shaws

I've been spending a huge amount of time recently researching our family tree and it's spurred me on to do something with the photographs I actually possess...This is my paternal Aunt and her hubby, I think he looks quite menacing and scary actually!

I created a double page spread and began by layering papers and transfers to give me the foundation for the photographs - nothing complicated, I used the humble eraser tool to soften any hard edges although in some cases I've allowed some sharp edges to stay as I wanted quite an untidy vibe to the page. The right hand side was completed first, the photograph masked then the figures extracted, layer duplicated and top layer hard light. I used a census page which documents my Aunt when she was younger and transformed it simply using the perspective tool, changing the mode to darken. The title is copied from her marriage certificate and layer changed to darken mode. The left hand page is done in much the same way using hard light and linear burn modes for the photographs, sandwiching some fotoglows and transfers in between the layers to introduce some colour.

To me he is very handsome and a hard worker, maybe with worries of the time. I love both sides of this spread, and on this page how you used a glow with the red and the repetition of his photo.

amazing layers! love the couple standing on the documents; yes it is a bit edgy, times were much harder weren't they. Beautiful work!

wow! I love all the colors and the blending is amazing! Glad you are having fun with your research! I think all the old photos where you had to sit for so long always gave a stern look to those in the photograph! awesome two pages!

Fabulous art and blending! Love the flow of color between the two pages!

These are gorgeous pages. And VERY intense. But then so is the research, and the wheel of life. Beautiful work, Fiona!

Love the large photo and then the incorporation of the smaller photos. Your extractions are fantastic and the movement of the soft bg pieces really pull the pages together.
