Journaling Reads: Built in 1932 to Mary Colters exacting specifications, including uncut stones so the weathered surfaces would blend with the canyon walls, the Watchtower looks to the Grand Canyons North Rim 10 miles away and to the Painted Desert to the East. Its modeled on the architecture of the Colorado Plateaus ancestral Puebloan people and the walls are rich with embedded artwork. Its an enchanted and enchanting structure. Outside, resting under the pion pines, we were offered pine nuts from an open cone by a native harvester. In the Southwest, pion pine nuts have been a staple food for 10,000 years and now only Native peoples are allowed to harvest them from Americas public lands. We had seen families gathering the cones throughout our trip, for personal use and for sale at roadside stands. Later on in the trip we were told in conversation just how unusual this sort of symbolic offering was, and we were grateful to the man who shared his bounty with us. --9-30-2017

Finishing up last Fall's Southwest Trip album with FotoInspired before we head out for for this summer's travels.
Beautiful photography. Such a great historical place. I love your FI layout of the sites and the story.

You're better than I if you've finished one trip's pages before starting another! Great documentation!
