Spousal Unit and I were in Bermuda last April (2017), during the week before Easter. We didn't know it at the time, but Good Friday in Bermuda is celebrated in a most unique and charming way. The entire country closes for business (we didn't know this was going to happen; thank heavens we'd gassed up the scooter and bought some food the day before!). Families pack up picnic lunches of homemade codfish cakes and hot cross buns and head out to beaches and parks...to fly kites! Wait--whaaaa??? The story is this: according to local lore a Bermudian Sunday school teacher, trying to explain the ascension of Christ to heaven to his young charges, made a kite in the shape of a cross and painted an image of Jesus onto the kite. He took the kite to a hillside, set it flying and then cut the string, allowing the kite to sail to heaven while his students looked on. For many years now, kite flying on Good Friday in Bermuda has been a beloved and eagerly awaited holiday celebration.

Although we did not have our own kite, we spent a most enjoyable Good Friday walking along several beaches and watching everyone else fly their kites.

"We were asked this question by nearly everyone we encountered today! Sadly, our answer was always No. Wed only just learned of this uniquely Bermudian Good Friday tradition yesterday and did not have time to purchase our own kite. However, that did not dampen our enthusiasm for the celebrations taking place all over the island today. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves as we walked along the beaches, eating traditional fish cakes and hot cross buns, watching the colorful kites as they filled the skies."
