Journaling reads:
Headed for the Grand Canyon, we left Springdale--and Zion National Park-- through the Zion/Mt. Carmel tunnel on the East side. Jess, our mule-trek guide, had told us that to blast the tunnel out of the rock in the 1930s, they worked in from both ends; in the middle they were off by only 5 ft. The scenery out the window was awesome. Also awesome was the shopping in Mt. Carmel Junction, a tiny town with a jumbo store that carried everything from Navajo jewelry to local snacks. You could buy patriotic shades and license plates from any state. We also enjoyed the Checkerboard Mesa overlook, right outside the tunnel. Standing at 6,670 ft., its named for a distinctive checkerboard pattern caused by expansion and contraction of the sandstone during winter. Desert bighorn sheep abound, but we didnt see any. They like the steep, rocky terrain because it keeps them out of range of their enemy, the mountain lion. We calculated the drive at four hours but it took us a lot longer because we had a lot of sightseeing to do, including the Navajo Bridge (a double span over the Colorado River in Lees Ferry, AZ), Pipe Spring National Monument (Fredonia, AZ), and the Vermillion Cliffs (Marble Canyon, AZ). We enjoyed our salads from the Cafe Soleil in Springdale at the Navajo Bridge...a good excuse to sit and absorb. We took our time, enjoying every single thing, and arrived in Tusayan after dark. --9/29/17
