Tarpon Springs to Brooksville
It was a beautiful day as we left Tarpon Springs on the Fred Marquis Pinellas Trail and passed from the suburbs into rural Florida on well-maintained, paved trails, with good signals and not too much conflict with cars. We passed cows and alligators, black water swamps with cyprus knees sticking out of the water, and large live oaks draped with Spanish moss. The Starkey Gap Trail passed through an area of incredibly skinny pine trees. The Suncoast Trail was built beside the Suncoast Parkway, four lanes wide and 70 mph traffic, but it was separated by a fence and plenty of room, with marshy areas on our left to look for alligators and wading birds.
We had our picnic lunch in a nice park, then just a short ride afterwards to roll right up to the door of our hotel. For dinner that evening we decided to walk to a sports bar that was just across the street. But to get to the crosswalk made it about a half-mile long walk!
