Anna May Wong (1905-1961):the 1st Chinese American movie star.Born in LA,she began acting in films at an early age.She appeared the first time in a Nazimova's film as an extra carrying a lantern. At the age of 17 she played her first leading role (a Technicolor movie before the coming of sound)Wong became a fashion icon, and by 1924 had achieved international stardom. In 1935 she was disappointed, when MGM refused to consider her for the leading role in its film version of a Pearl S. Buck's novel.Hollywood proved reluctant to create starring roles for Wong; her ethnicity prevented U.S. filmmakers from seeing her as a leading lady.It soon became evident that Wong's career would continue to be limited by American anti-miscegenation laws, which prevented her from sharing an on-screen kiss with any European-American actor.
