This is the first of a trio of layouts in which I was trying to capture the sense of light, space and atmosphere of this magical place.

Cap Ferret, in the Gironde in the west of France, is a narrow spit of land with the Baie dArcachon on one side and the Atlantic on the other. We were staying in our little caravan on a nearby campsite for a few days as part of our long journey south. We were totally unaware that it has been known as the Gallic Hamptons and has something of an A-list status! We were charmed by the seemingly endless sandy beaches on the Atlantic coast, with protected access through forest pathways giving on to sand dunes. We then went down to the tip of the peninsula with great views over the Bay towards Arcachon with the famous Dune du Pyla (or Pilat), the highest sand dune in Europe.
