Unlike the ruins of Rheinfels or similar castle and fortress structures scattered around the Rhine and Mosel Rivers, Burg Eltz was a real-deal castle. with records of a castle on this site dating back to 1157, and the present-day castle looking today as it did in 1490. There is still a count of Eltz whose family goes back 33 generations. Castle visitors help pay the bills.
To keep on schedule for the rest of the day, we had to hustle back to the train station in Moselkern, doing the 5 km return hike in about 40 minutes.
