My favorite and most memorable Christmas gift was given to me 2 weeks
before Christmas, in December of 2004. I remember it like it was yesterday.
My then boyfriend and I were decorating our Christmas tree, and he was so
very clumsy. He broke 2 of my best ornaments! He was dropping things, and
acting strangely, and then he dropped the tree topper, a beautiful glass angel!
was pretty annoyed and I couldn't understand what has going on with him!
I said he was careless and i would finish on my own. I took a ride to a nearby
store to look for a new tree topper. When I got home, there he was, at the tree.
He apologized for being clumsy and said we should finish decorating
together. So as we went to put more ornaments on the tree, Mike said to me,
I really like this one... but I couldn't tell what he was pointing at and I just
agreed. A few minutes later he said dont you love this ornament? I looked up
but couldnt see what he was talkingt about. I said, What ornament?
Mike said, This one, this really shiny one... I had to stand up and as i did, I saw
a beautiful shiny round diamond engagement ring hanging from a branch near
the top of the Christmas tree!!! As I tried to take in what was happening,
Mike got down on one knee, and proposed to me.
Finally, it made sense! THIS was why he was so clumsy, and jittery, and dropping
ornaments! He was nervous!! And here I was calling him careless!!!
That Christmastime proposal was special, funny, overwhelming, and very
happy. It has led to a great marriage and one beautiful son. I love this memory
and that is why its top on my list as favorite Christmas gift!
