JOURNALING:
CANCER FREE
GOOD NEWS IN GAINESVILLE
December 15, 2016
Trooper Braswell was declared cancer free today by the Vets at the University of Florida Veterinary School after screening tests yesterday.
On July 8, after a groomer noticed lesions on the inside of Troopers left rear leg, he was taken to his normal veterinarian, Dr. Kathy Vliet. A skin biopsy was performed and Trooper was referred to the Oncology Department at the University of Florida. Their examination confirmed the diagnosis of Mast Cell Tumor, Grade 2, which means there is a single tumor with metastasis into the surrounding lymph nodes. Because Troopers tumors were rated as high grade, amputation of the limb followed by chemotherapy was the recommended course of action by Veterinarian Stacy Fox.
The amputation was performed on August 10 and chemotherapy started one week later. After some initial vomiting the day after chemo and vomiting and diarrhea Labor Day weekend, Trooper has tolerated his bi-weekly chemotherapy treatments exceedingly well.
Trooper is scheduled for a recheck in January and will continue to be monitored by Dr. Fox at the Small Animal Hospital for several years.
FIESTY
Owners said this of their youngest Papillon, Trooper was the only male pup we have who lifted his right rear leg to urinate, standing on his left leg. He quickly learned that he no longer could do that after a couple episodes of falling. Except for that little wrinkle, he has adjusted to life on three legs very easily. He was back to chasing squirrels just a few weeks post amputation. Recently, he led the charge to the fence as all four of the pups objected to the loud barks from a neighbors dog on the other side.
