I have used as background paper the Artsy Holly paper1 (coming soon), and applied to it the blending mode difference, that changed the color completely.
The image was also treated with a water color brush technique very softly,
changing the size and opacity of the brush on every stroke, the brush impressions had a significant spacing between them.
The watercolor strokes are associated with colors that merge well in the composition.
I also used a drop shadow on the central image, with the intention of creating a 3D effect with respect to the background paper.
