Convalescent Hospital
The U.S. Navy closed off more than fifty fireplaces and added steam heat. They painted over a long brick wall because it couldn't be sterile enough for a hospital. They replaced the bells in the bell towers with air raid sirens and sent the bells off to be melted and made into munitions for the war. They pulled up carpets and installed a red, wear resistant material used for interior decking on their ships.
