Deadman Lookout Tower
The original wood tower 15 miles west of Red Feather Lakes was built by the CCC, and visitors said it swayed in heavy winds, just like a tree. The metal tower was built in 1962, and is on the National Historic Lookout Register. With an elevation of 10,700 feet, the tower is snowed in until early July. Permanent staffing ended in 1970, but the tower is operational and open to the public in the summer. During extreme fire conditions in 2012, it was used by professional firefighters as an active fire lookout. The tower serves as a radio communications site for the Roosevelt National Forest and for the Larimer County Sheriff's Department.
