AnnacolorChallenge 10.24.-11.06.2014

This final day was the incentive I needed to get this story told!

My father and his brother both served in the US Army during WWII. My Uncle Tommy on the left, the younger of these two, took part in the DDay Invasion. My father Maurice, on the right, arrived afterwards, as he said in the mop up - Bastogne, the Battle of the Bulge, and eventually on to Berchesgarden and Hitlers Eagles Nest.

Both men saw considerable combat but this image shows one particular good day for them in Germany. Ive never known where it was but it was an impressive building, most likely a German military structure then occupied by the US Army. My father and his brother only met by chance at this location and Im sure the image made my grandparents very happy whenever the photo arrived back in the United States. My Uncle Tommy had also met up with the eldest brother Jimmy, the only boy in the family to serve as an officer. My family was very fortunate that all three brothers returned home alive, one to a VA hospital and the others with "only" non visible wounds.

My father never wanted to talk of his war experiences and as he died at age 53 of ALS, his own memories are gone. Sadly, his military records were also lost in the fire at VA headquarters but with a photo like this one, a memory remains and service is honored.

Thanks for looking!
I'm so glad your dad and his brothers arrived safely home. It is sad that your dad died so young, though, but this photo is priceless! Love the background overlay.

This is a fantastic heritage page.
I read your journaling twice. This photo is very special.
Love how you've used the challenge colors, too.

sounds like you are so lucky to have this photo to be able to tell the history that you do know. It is so sad that your dad died at such a very young age. What a wonderful story behind the photo. Fabulous heritage page Maureen.

What a treasure of a photograph to have Maureen and I enjoyed the story of the photograph immensely!
