My great grandmother Mary with her two daughters, my great aunts who were very dear to me. I never noticed their old-fashioned clothes or the old old house and furniture that had been their mothers. I just loved being there with them. They made me cups of tea and taught me how to make scones. Then we took some with us when visiting elderly parishioners. Sometimes we cut their hair or gave them a manicure as well. First thing of a morning we walked in the dew and watched the sun sparkling on the poppies and roses. They taught me to play bridge and invited me to play Mozart and Beethoven sonatas or a Strauss waltz when they had visitors to afternoon tea. I remember them still though they are long gone but I never forget to slow down the days for my own grandchildren or to introduce them to my friends. I've taught them to play the Blue Danube as well as the Beatles and we rock and roll to Elvis at full volume. We talk of cabbages and kings and anything to do with books and I hope one day they'll look back to when the world was young.
