I spent so many hours in Lake View in 1995 trying to redo our 1983 survey of breeding birds for data I used to write a booklet on them. One special part of that time was these woodpeckers.
Text: From May 10 I followed a pair of Red-headed Woodpeckers until I found their nest in a gray birch. Young were ready to fledge in July and then they were hard to find. A big surprise came in August when they seemed to want to nest there again though they aren't known to have 2nd broods here. Late August they gave up on the attempt. While watching, I got these photos and so liked the one in flight that I created a stylized version that I used in a booklet on breeding birds in Lake View.
