Journaling: It was the early 1970s, and we were spending the Holidays with my in-laws in Chicago. My mother-in-law and I got along like two peas in a pod. I called her Mom and she called me Sis, trying to deny her obvious age. She was an avid bargain hunter, and by Christmas we owned Aldens Basement. In passing, I noticed a wig display. There was this platinum blonde pageboy - and I fell in love with it. I had to have it! My husband Bill didnt much care what I wore as long as it looked nice. Actually, his motto was If youve got it - flaunt it Alas, to his dismay, I was not the flaunting kind. However, he drew the line at wigs. I told Mom about it , and we started plotting. I would buy the wig, give it to her, she would wrap it and give it to me as a Christmas present. The perfect scheme! Christmas morning came and I tore the paper off my box and there it was - a shiny black patent leather case with a wig stand and the WIG. I was the happiest girl around! I stole a sideways glance at my husband; he was laughing! I am sure he saw right through our little charade, but to his credit, he never let on. With my shiny new - and obviously fake - wig, short coat and boots, I felt beautiful! Nancy Sinatra had nothing on me!
