A Thin Place
We were so lucky with the weather on the day Kate, Pauline and I visited Glendalough because, it has to be admitted, there is a reason for the beautiful GREEN countryside. That reason is rain and plenty of it! On Friday June 5th 2015, however, the weather was perfect.
The wonderfully cheerful and helpful women in the Visitor Centre provided us with a map. We chose to follow one on the marked trails along the river, through the woods and by the Lower Lake from the car park to the Upper Lake. Its a wonder we ever left as there was so much to see, to photograph and simply enjoy!
Places where people feel most strongly connected with Gods presence are referred to in Celtic spirituality as thin places. It is in these places where the seen and unseen worlds are most closely connected and inhabitants of both worlds can momentarily touch the other. Glendalough is such a place. Despite the inevitable numbers of visitors to such a well-known and important site we never felt crowded or overwhelmed, but on the contrary, strongly sensed the peace of the place.
