another story...
this is a redo of an older page. i changed the journaling a bit. the original was a lift of a page titled "papa was a baker."

Journaling: I come from a family of bakers. My grandmother made all sorts of wonderful things including biscochos, hard cookie rings baked with a sprinkling of sesame seeds. The recipe was given to my grandmother by her mother. My grandmother always let me help with the baking. It was my job to roll the cookie rings and sprinkle the sesame seeds. Whenever I baked with my grandmother, my grandfather would sit at the kitchen table and play word games with me. He was the official taster. We spent many happy hours talking and baking in my grandmothers kitchen.

30 years later, my grandmother didnt bake as much. Making biscochos was too hard because of the hours of standing. I asked my grandmother for the recipe. She gave me a list of ingredients and I made my first batch of cookies. They werent what I remembered. Something was missing. I tried again. Still no success. I called my grandmother and she told me it just takes practice, and practice I did. But I never got it right. One day, I went to visit my grandmother. Pencil at the ready, I asked her to tell me step-by-step how to make the cookies. I learned, for the first time, that there was a secret ingredient. I also learned a few other things not written in my version of the recipe. I went home and tried again. I got much closer this time. I continued to make batches of biscochos and send them to my grandmother to taste. One day she called me and said, As good as my mother used to make. My heart was happy. At least twice a year I bake biscochos (now, my son rolls the cookie rings) and send them to my grandmother. She is 91 years old and each time she gets a box she calls to say thank you from her and my Nana.

This year, my grandmother died. Her birthday came and went and no baking was done. I thought about it, but I wasnt ready. Soon, though. There is a tradition to carry on.
